Recreation and Leisure
Botswana does not in fact have much recreation and leisure at all. All of the Motswana’s (the people of Botswana) own a piece of land (cattle post) and their free time (leisure time) is either fishing, for food or looking after their piece of land as subsistence farmers
On an evening many people go to the shebeens (pub) where they enjoy music and drinks. There are also some nightclubs in the cities and big villages.
A craft unique to Botswana is basket making. Local grasses, particularly from the Okavango Delta and natural dies are used by women to weave into various styles of baskets. This is what most of the women in Botswana do in their leisure time.
Outdoor activities are the most popular in Botswana. One of the well known events is the Toyota Botswana 1000km Kalahari Desert Race. It is a 4x4 motor-sport race and is popular with people from all over the world.
One of Botswana’s tradional and unique games is mancala which was created by Motswana’s, but Botswana does not have any sport unique to it. Lots of the people in Botswana play football and lots of their leisure time is spent watching football matches. Young, middle aged, rich and poor people are the ones that participate in the sport (mostly football).
Botswana has its own football, rugby and youth swimming team. Its rugby team is the Vultures, its football team is the Zebras. There are many youth swimming teams and one of the big events for them is the North vs. South swimming championship were eleven schools from all over Botswana travel to the Capital (Gaborone) to compete in this championship.
For the children in Botswana there leisure time is spent either swimming in the river (although there are crocodiles) running around pushing metal cars that they made out of cans etc.
